Artist's Description
Although called a ‘palm’, the King Sago Palm is not actually a palm tree at all, but one of a very ancient group of plants called Cycads. These remarkable plants are living fossils, dating back 300 million years, and are among the earliest plants living on land. They were alive with the dinosaurs, but many were destroyed in the mass extinction that destroyed the dinosaurs as well. The 300 species that exist today are all that are left. Cycads are the ancestors of conifers, the needle trees that we grow, such as pine, spruce, juniper and cypress. If you keep your Sago Palm for many years it will eventually form seed heads that look a lot like giant fir cones, proving its connection to conifers.

I've lived in Hawaii since 2002, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,400 residents. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years as a commercial illustrator, senior art director and design director for major advertising agencies and design studios in Chicago, San Francisco and Palo Alto California. I've always loved cooking. In 2002 that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts just before moving to Hawaii. Since then I designed and built a house, worked in local restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography as a hobby.
