Description
The Kahili flower is native to Australia. It has red or cream-colored flowers borne in cylindrical spikes. Parts of this plant are poisonous and the hairy ovaries of the flowers may trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Because of this, kahili flowers are used only for head leis here in Hawaii. The Hawaiian name, Ha'iku, is derived from the location on Maui where this plant was first introduced.
