This strange looking fruit is called lilikoi here in Hawaii. It is the Hawaiian word for passion fruit. If you haven't tasted lilikoi, do yourself a favor and find some, it's a sensory treat.
Fortunately for the people who live in Hawaii, lilikoi are plentiful. Fortunately for me, lilikoi vines grow in my yard, so I can enjoy them when they are in season. What makes them extraordinary is their unusual tropical flavor.
My favorite way to eat lilikoi is simply to cut them in half with a bread knife and spoon the sweet/sour pulp and juice into my mouth for breakfast. The black seeds are crunchy, and can be eaten as well. The tangy juice is used in many recipes here. Visit my website at tastinghawaii.com for a delicious selection.
