Description
Chiaroscuro: A visual trope, using a stark contrast between dark and light in an image, usually for dramatic effect.
The subject of this photograph is known as the 'Tropical Smokebush', Euphorbia cotinifolia 'Atropurpurea', because of its attractive burgundy-red foliage.
As is typical for Euphorbia, the sticky white sap is both unpleasantly viscous as well as outright poisonous. The sap is so poisonous that it can be added to water to stun fish, causing them to float to the surface and be readily harvestable. It can also be used to tip poison arrows.
Euphorbia cotinifolia is native to Mexico and South America. It reaches 10 to 15 ft but can be grown as a tree reaching 30 ft., but grows beautifully here in the warm weather of Hawaii.
