The sliced starfruit shown here on a plate, came from a tree in my backyard here on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. If you haven't tried this beautiful tropical fruit, it's similar to a crisp, juicy apple, with the texture of a grape. They are sweet when they are yellow, and firm and mildly sour when greenish yellow. For more info and photos with recipes, visit my recipe blog at tastinghawaii.com
Chefs all over the Hawaiian islands have discovered starfruit and are using it as a garnish, or as an ingredient in their tropical cuisine. A starfruit has approximately 30 calories. It is also a worthwhile source of fiber, vitamin C, carbohydrates, and water.
Do not eat starfruit if you have known kidney problems. The fruit contains a neurotoxin that healthy kidneys can filter out, but damaged kidneys are unable to do so.

Since then I designed and built a house, worked in local restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography as a hobby. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing...
