Description
This 15x10 foot small tree, is beautiful when it's in full bloom in February, here on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. For obvious reasons, its common name is Starburst, or Clerodendrum quadriloculare, and is originally from the Eastern Hemisphere, native to New Guinea and the Philippines.
Luckily for me, I have one of the trees growing in my yard, where it enjoys our acidic, alkaline volcanic soil, and lots of sunshine and rain. This spectacular flowering species is also planted throughout South Florida and is noticed primarily in winter from January thru April, when it burst into bloom. Not only are its blooms incredible, but when not blooming, its large leaves are dark green on top and purple on the bottom, making it attractive all year.

Strange and beautiful. In all my years in The Islands, I have never seen this flower.

I love this tree Mary, I have planted two more in my front yard. Can't wait until February when it blooms again. Thanks for your comment Mary. James

Gorgeous James! Believe it or not, the one in my yard is still blooming! I woke up last night to its heavenly scent flooding my bedroom. Aloha
James Temple replied:
Wow that's interesting Heidi. I found that this tree sends up little ones all around it. I have several planted in pots to give away to friends and neighbors.
