Artist's Description
The star fruit or carambola is a tropical fruit that is gaining popularity in the United States. It acquired its name from the five pointed star shape when cut across the middle of the fruit. It has a waxy, golden yellow to green color skin with a complicated flavor combination that includes plums, pineapples, and lemons.
Originally from Sri Lanka and the Moluccas, and cultivated in Southeast Asia and Malaysia for several hundred years, this fruit also goes by many other names including: bilimbi, belimbing, Chinese star fruit, five-angled fruit and the star apple.
Today, star fruit flourishes in south Florida and Hawaii because the fruit thrives on growing in a warm environment.
Two types of star fruit are grown, tart and sweet. Tart varieties typically have narrowly spaced ribs, while sweet varieties tend to have thick, fleshy ribs. The tastes between the two are hardly distinguishable, as the tart variety still has some sweetness. This tropical fruit is r...
About James Temple
I've lived in Hawaii since 2002, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,400 residents. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years as a commercial illustrator, senior art director and design director for major advertising agencies and design studios in Chicago, San Francisco and Palo Alto California. I've always loved cooking. In 2002 that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts just before moving to Hawaii. Since then I designed and built a house, worked in local restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography as a hobby. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing...

Beautiful capture! I planted one at my home in Kihei, Maui in 1978 and it flourished until I moved away in 2000. I was fortunate to be able to drive by and see it last October when I visited the islands -- and it's huge! The new owners have taken great care of it. Miss this fruit. Great photo. L/F Featured in Hawaiiana. Aloha!🌴
James Temple replied:
Aloha Jane, yes this is an unusual fruit and so beautiful. Thanks for the comment and the feature!

Nicely done! At first glance I thought they were Chinese Lantern flowers. l/f
James Temple replied:
RC, I planted a starfruit tree 14 years ago in my yard here in Hawaii and now it is about 25 feet tall. Last Thanksgiving I developed a recipe for Starfruit Cranberry Relish, using both whole slices of stars and chopped stars with cranberries and other tasty things. Now I make it every year. The recipe is on my food blog at tastinghawaii.com. Thanks for the comment!
