Artist's Description
Kaunakakai is a very small dusty town but it is the largest town on the island of Molokai. The buildings are mostly wooden and there are no stop lights. Traffic moves slowly on main street. Once in a while two cars going in opposite directions, will stop and "talk story", creating a backup in traffic. It's OK though because no one is in a hurry here. Oh by the way, the gas prices on the left have gone up quite a bit since I took this photo, now $5.05 a gallon for regular, the highest in Hawaii. That's why I just bought an all electric car.
About James Temple
I've lived in Hawaii since 2002, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,400 residents. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years as a commercial illustrator, senior art director and design director for major advertising agencies and design studios in Chicago, San Francisco and Palo Alto California. I've always loved cooking. In 2002 that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts just before moving to Hawaii. Since then I designed and built a house, worked in local restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography as a hobby. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing...

Just how we remembered it and you captured that islands feel perfectly. Great news about your electric car James - every little bit helps. We sold one of our cars and ride our bikes more often now - despite bad decisions from Washington.

Thanks Kevin

Nothing like I imagined...almost looks like an Australian outback town except the shop awning would be wider. Great work l/f
James Temple replied:
You know, I have never lived in a place like Molokai, Kaunakakai looks just like this except the gas prices are higher now $4.05 a gallon. We recently bought an all electric car powered by solar panels on our roof. This whole island will be on solar soon according to the state of Hawaii. Thanks Denise!

Exactly perfect for Kaunakaki!!! Beautiful James. Aloha nui. l/f
James Temple replied:
It's not much of a town Heidi but it's all we've got. No stop lights, all old wooden buildings, with red dusty streets, and the highest gas prices in the country. We just bought an electric car, so when we pass by the two gas stations in town we just grin. Have a great 4th of July!

Love that Sky! Great capture!
James Temple replied:
Thanks again George, everything in this photo is still true today except the gas prices posted on the sign have gone up $2 a gallon since I took this photo.

Hi James, I am a streetscene painter, and was a daily contributor to your Cremes group, currently on much needed little break, because that Cremes thing requires quite the time the major consuming commitment,. But I just had to welcome you .. I always make a point of reading the artists description, and yours really puts this amazing photo into such clear perspective,, On the one hand you have the dusty little mainstreet, with its tiny strip of probably very necessary but extremely basic, stores, BUT THEN...we look up...and can hardly believe our eyes,,,, THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THAT SKY...leaves me almost speechless,,,the clouds look like mountains, in a celestial parallel universe that has allowed you a fortuitous glimpse..the mauves, the cerulean blues, proof of a master painter's hand at work,,,I TOTALITY LOVE THE DUALITY of this piece, your new friend Carole..
