Description
The most common variety of pineapple grown in Hawaii is the Smooth Cayenne. It is around 5-6 lbs. with pale yellow to yellow flesh. It is cylindrical in shape, and has a high sugar and acid content. This variety is well adapted to canning and processing, and is the most easily obtainable in U.S. grocery stores. You can actually grow your own pineapple at home as I did, it's easy but you have to be patient. Twist off the top from the fruit, pull off the bottom leaves to about 1-2 inches of clean stalk is showing, Place the stalk in a glass of water, out of direct sunlight for about 3 weeks until roots form. Plant in sunlight, and wait 20 to 24 months before a new pineapple appears.
