Description
There are over 200 names for rain in the Hawaiian language. It is clear that ancient Hawaiians valued rain and its intricacies. They understood one of the most incredible facts about Hawaiiʻs ecosystem: it is one of the very few regions in the world, and nowhere else in the United States, where rainfall gradients are as steep as they are, increasing 25 inches for each mile transversed along a straight line.
This morning I witnessed, and photograph, this image of the clouds parting, allowing the suns rays to shine as the rain fell over the Hawaiian Island of Moloka'i. Not being a religious person, I felt as though I had experienced something spiritual, either that or Donald Trump was about to land.
